Congratulations to undergraduate Astronomy & Astrophysics major Bradley Hutchinson, who has been selected to receive a Drs. Sidney and Becca Fleischer Research Scholarship supporting his summer research with faculty member Caty Pilachowski. Fleischer Research Scholarships support outstanding undergraduate students conducting research in the life or physical sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. The scholarship also provides funding for Bradley to attend a conference to present his research.
Bradley’s research involves the use of a long-short term memory autoencoder to identify stellar types using multi-color photometry from large, multi-band surveys. He has demonstrated the ability to identify rare stellar types and stars with anomalous photometry. His work is relevant to the analysis of multi-band photometric data from the Rubin Observatory, which is scheduled to begin operations later this year.
