On October 31, 2025, Ethan Vishniac, Frank Timmes (Editor in Chief and Associate Editor in Chief of AAS Journals), and Manolis Georgoulis (a Scientific Editor for AAS Journals) visited IU Astronomy to host an AAS Peer Review Workshop. The workshop was flawlessly organized by IU Astronomy graduate student Anika Goal, and was attended by 21 postdocs and graduate students, including visiting students from Purdue University and the University of Louisville.
The AAS Peer Review Workshops train graduate students and early career researchers on the principles and practices of scientific peer review for the AAS journals. This interactive workshop guided participants through the peer review process, included hands-on exercises on writing effective referee reports, and offered insights into what editors look for during review of scientific papers. Participants gained practical experience by preparing example referee reports and earned a certificate designating them as certified reviewers upon completion of the workshop.
We’re grateful to the AAS for sponsoring the workshop, and to editors Vishniac, Timmes, and Georgoulis for presenting this in-person workshop for our students - and especially grateful to Anika Goel for making the workshop available here at IU.
