Each year, the Department of Astronomy participates in the College’s Science Fest event, offering hands on activities, tours of Kirkwood Observatory, and a glimpse of the universe beyond Earth. Science Fest brings thousands of kids and families to campus to enjoy a day of science.
Some years ago, Astronomy hosted a “solar system quiz” on the Science Fest website (https://sciencefest.indiana.edu/solar-system-quiz/ ). Amazingly, the site remains popular. Solar System Quiz has been viewed nearly 40,000 times in the past 12 months, with some 22,000 users. The site is accessed especially from India and the Philippines, with views also from Viet Nam.
This year Science Fest Eclipse Edition, will be on Saturday, April 6th, just two days before the total solar eclipse. It’s free to the public, with free parking in campus parking garages. Departments and groups from forty different areas across the College campus have planned hands-on activities for all. Visitors can learn astronomy and the human history of solar eclipses, as well as rocks, minerals, and fossils; tree rings; archaeology; geology; puzzles; American Sign Language; and much more.
