Visiting Assistant Professor Zachary Maas recently shared his thoughts on being an early career faculty member with Physics Today. In addition to his research, Zack teaches introductory astronomy at IU, and shares some of what he learned at the Faculty Teaching Institute—a professional development workshop sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Physical Society, and the American Astronomical Society.
Time management is also critical for new faculty, and Zack shares his favorite strategies for staying on top of things. Zack stresses these strategies are especially important for first year faculty who are learning to handle so many new tasks. Zack emphasized also the importance of supportive friends and mentors for surviving that first year.
