IU Astronomy faculty and students hosted our first ever Latine Heritage Celebration on Thursday, Oct. 10, with astronomy lectures in Spanish and a bilingual tour of Kirkwood Observatory. Professor Cristobal Petrovich spoke on “Explorado mundos tejanos: Exoplanetas y sus ciclos de vida (Exploring distant worlds and their life cycles)” and postdoctoral associate Dr. Francisco Aros spoke on “Buscando el estabón perdido: ¿Dónde estan los agujeros negros de masa intermedia? (Searching for the missing link: Where are the intermediate mass black holes?)”
Following questions and refreshments, participants adjourned to Kirkwood Observatory for a bilingual tour and a look at the night sky, hosted by undergraduate students Izzy Flores and Bradley Hutchinson, and graduate students Augustin Heron and Jessica Ranshaw. The moon was perfectly placed at first quarter, and everyone got a good look at its mountains and craters.
The even was co-sponsored by IU Bloomington’s La Casa/Latino Cultural Center, and we appreciate their help and guidance.
