IU Astronomy student Izzy Flores is receiving the 2024 Distinguished Undergraduate Student award from the Latino Faculty and Staff Council. Izzy has been very active as President of the Undergraduate Astronomy Club. As a result of her efforts, club membership has grown this year, and we have more students participating – nearly 30 at last count. She helped extensively with our education and community engagement activities leading up to the April total eclipse, and organizing our undergraduate volunteers to support eclipse activities, including a Spanish-language video about the eclipse produced by WTIU.
Izzy has also been one of our most active undergraduate research students, as well, studying the spectra of M dwarf stars that host planets. In our summer, 2023, undergraduate research program, Izzy was the spark that brought our cohort of diverse students together, helping everyone feel a part of the program and guiding and advising students who were just learning new skills. She made the program work for everyone.
The award will be presented on April 19, 2024 at the Virgil T DeVault Alumni Center.
