Congratulations to IU alumna Madeline Shepley (BS, 2020). Madeline earned a Master’s degree in Physics at Ball State University this spring, and is headed to Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois, where she will teach astronomy and physics and direct the planetarium. Madeline is featured in the Indiana Space Grant Spotlight for her efforts to share her love of astronomy with kids. While at Ball State University Madeline worked as a planetarium assistant at the Charles W. Brown Planetarium. She not only presented shows at the planetarium, but also facilitated hands-on STEM activities before planetarium shows, created new shows, and taught about space.

Madeline’s goal has been a career in planetariums and science communication. Her degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics at IU, along with her experience at the Ball State planetarium is just the ticket. Madeline experienced the total solar eclipse in 2017 while a student at IU, and is excited about educating people about the coming solar eclipse in April, 2024, and how to watch it safely. She received a Master’s fellowship from the Indiana Space Grant Consortium to support her efforts to prepare for the coming total eclipse.
