Astronomy alumnus Jude Gussman (BS 2022) presented the student perspective at the Luddy School’s Commencement ceremony. Jude graduated with triple degrees in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Computer Science, and Math. We’re happy to share Judd’s advice to his fellow students with all of you.
Jude’s research with us involved studying the spectra of double lined spectroscopic binary stars. Disentangling the contributions of each star is difficult, but Jude dove in and wrote a complex computer program to sort out the signal from each star to determine temperatures and compositions of the two stars separately.
Jude also served as President of our undergraduate Astronomy Club, helping the Department to resurrect our rooftop telescopes, which had suffered during the Swain West renovation. With his leadership, the telescopes became valuable Club resources.
One of the joys of academic work is watching our students fly out into the world, using the skills and habits of mind we try to teach. In Jude’s case, we have no doubt of his future success!
