Congratulations to Catharine Garmany (B.S. Astrophysics, 1966) on her election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Katy is a Scientist Emerita at NSF’s NOIRLab and was elected for “distinguished contribution to the study of massive stars, and exemplary astronomical outreach to underserved communities.” She is one of 11 astronomers honored in 2022 by the AAAS.
Katy earned her Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. Before joining the NOIRLab staff as an Senior Science Education Specialist, she was a professor at the University of Colorado, where her research focused on the formation and evolution of massive stars. She also served as an Associate Professor of Astronomy at Columbia University, teaching astronomy at Biosphere 2 in Arizona. She received the Annie J. Cannon Prize of the American Astronomical Society in 1976.
While at NOIRLab, Katy worked closely with the Tohono O’odham Nation to develop educational opportunities and build community connections between the Nation and the Kitt Peak National Observatory.
